5 ways to create a festive environment for your business

For many businesses the festive period provides the opportunity to make over fifty percent of their annual sales. Having moved on significantly from last year's restrictions, this is an opportunity to go BIG and make up for lost sales from last year's muted Christmas. By planning early you can avoid overwhelm and have peace of mind. Here I have pulled out the main aspects that will help you and your customers get in the festive mood-

1. Theme
Establish your theme. Will you be going for the traditional red and gold look? Perhaps you want something a bit more contemporary with simple lines and less traditional colours? Or are you more natural, organic and rustic? Christmas doesn’t have to include a Christmas tree as a focal point, you can focus more on other traditional aspects such as wreaths, baubles, or religious references. You could also consider how the colours you use link in with your brand identity.

2. Lighting

Light can really transform an environment, there are a variety of styles and colours available creating different atmospheres. A white LED light will give a blue and sterile light whilst a warm LED light will give off a warmer yellow light more akin to a traditional winter warming feel. Garden centres are a great starting point where you can explore the many options such as fairy lights, light curtains or fibre optics incorporated into a tree. You could also use candle lighting or a safer option of battery-operated LED candles.

3. Foliage

There’s nothing like the scent of a real Christmas tree, however, it's not always practical. The traditional Douglas Fir or Norway Spruce do have a limited shelf life, they can also take up a lot of space so decide if you really do have enough space without reducing the function of your space. If you plan to have a tree every year then investing in a good quality artificial tree may be a good long term investment. An artificial tree can also be scented to re-create the real Christmas tree scent so your customers may never even know the difference.

4. Music

I’m not just referring to Mariah Carey’s ‘All I want for Christmas is you’, you don’t have to follow the norm with the obvious choices, think about your brand and customer and find music to suit it. Spotify is always a good starting point or other similar streaming services. I'd also recommend you have a variety as we soon get bored of it after a few months!

5. Scent

This also needs to link with your brand and there are a variety of ways to create complementary scents- Plug-in diffusers, reed diffusers, oil burners with essentials oils, candles and incense sticks, the list goes on. Just be mindful of fire safety.
