I’ve always had a creative streak. Art and Craft, Design and Technology were my favourite subjects at school, and that led me on to an art foundation course and degree in Three-Dimensional design at Northumbria University. My first job after graduation was in Visual Merchandising, and what better place to learn my trade than at the high-street stalwart Marks & Spencer!
My career has taken me to various other high street brands such as The Pier, Wyevale Garden Centres and Homesense. The recession in 2009 had a huge impact on retail so it proved timely to take a huge leap of faith. I became a freelance Visual Merchandiser, mostly for Primark. My work for them involved installing promotional window schemes and setting up new stores nationwide and throughout Europe. As satisfying for me was working for independent businesses sourcing their props and equipment and creating their bespoke window schemes. It gave me a real opportunity to put my own mark on a project and without having to pay too much attention to corporate guidelines!
Adapting to the changing retail market I took a side step into the charity sector to manage a couple of charity shops. Although both have called upon my most creative ideas, unlike the big-budget, mass-produced world of high street retail, charity retail celebrates the very best of reuse, re-purpose and recycle. Everything is a one-off so there is huge potential for really individual and inspiring visual merchandising. Of course, there is never a budget for props. That has only fed my enthusiasm to become super resourceful in re-purposing donations as equipment. But the end result is decidedly and satisfyingly unique, achieving a look and appeal on a par with the high street.
Seeing first-hand the quality of donations in charity shops, really piqued my interest in online sellers, flea markets and salvage yards. I’m really proud that my own home has been furnished with preloved vintage and retro bric-a-brac and furniture.
Identifying the need to help homeowners realise the potential of preloved goods I set about styling interiors for others, staging property to let, styling period homes and breathing life into new build properties which naturally lead me to more commercial interior settings.
